COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports last night, in a varsity boy’s-girl’s basketball makeup doubleheader from games that were snowed out last month in Coldwater, the host Cardinals were swept by Gull Lake. In the action you heard here on AM 1590 and the new FM 95.5 WTVB, the visiting Blue Devils rallied to win the girl’s contest 39-to-36 while the Gull Lake boys beat Coldwater 63-to-45.
The girl’s contest saw the Lady Cardinals take a 24-to-19 halftime lead and they were ahead 31-to-25 heading into the final quarter, in which Gull Lake outscored Coldwater 14-to-5. Alissa Herlan had 9 points for Coldwater while on the boards, Ashley Burkhardt had 15 rebounds along with her 8 points and Kenzie Galloway pulled down 10 rebounds to go with her 7 points. Galloway was named our McDonald’s Player of the Game for Coldwater, which slips to 11-and-8 overall and 6-and-7 in the SMAC East. Gull Lake is now 15-and-4 and 11-and-2 in the division.
Elsewhere last night in girl’s basketball, Quincy was a winner at Union City 43-to-22. Katie Santi had 15 points while Sarah Ward had 11 rebounds for Quincy, which finished the regular season at 2-and-12 in the Big Eight and 2-and-18 overall. Union City ended up winless in league play and 5-and-15 overall. Quincy and Union City will be playing next week in the Class-C district at Jonesville.
Also, Bronson was a winner at home over Bellevue 57-to-36. The host Lady Vikings led 28-to-13 at the half and pulled away with 22 more points in the third quarter. Amberly Bercaw had 11 points for Bronson while Skyler Sobeski added 10 points. Bronson’s j-v girl’s team lost to Marshall last night 52-to-18. Kinslea Blouin had 6 points while Makayla Sikorski had 10 rebounds.
Turning to boy’s varsity basketball and Coldwater’s 63-to-45 loss to Gull Lake, the Blue Devils basically settled things early, going up 15-to-2 at the end of the first quarter and they led 35-to-9 at halftime. Coldwater trailed by as many as 30 points in the third quarter before Gull Lake finished off the 18-point victory.
Dakota Burke, who scored 14 points for the Cardinals, all in the second half, was our McDonald’s Player of the Game for Coldwater. The Cardinals drop to 3-and-16 and 1-and-12 in the SMAC East. The Blue Devils are 11-and-2 in the division and 14-and-3 overall. Coldwater finishes up the regular season Friday night at home with a boys-girls doubleheader against Sturgis.
In boy’s hoops only last night, Quincy lost 40-to-39 at Napoleon. Alex Ditton led the visiting Orioles with 20 points while Luke Haberl pulled down 13 rebounds and had 5 blocks along with his 5 points. The non-conference defeat dropped Quincy’s record to 11-and-7.
In reserve boy’s and girl’s basketball last night, it was Coldwater vs. Kalamazoo Loy Norrix and Loy Norrix made it a four game sweep. In the boy’s action, played in the old gym at Coldwater high, the host Cardinals lost 31-to-28 while in the freshman game, the Knights beat the Cardinals 44-to-39. Matt Gutowski had 10 points for Coldwater.
In the girl’s games at Loy Norrix, the Knights nipped Coldwater 38-to-37 in the j-v contest with 14 points and 10 rebounds for Kylei Philson while Kellie Pierucki also had 10 rebounds along with six points. And Loy Norrix won the freshman contest 34-to-28. Camrie Surbrook had 10 points and 8 rebounds for Coldwater.
On tonight’s high school schedule, in boy’s basketball, it’s Union City at Tekonsha. And in bowling, Coldwater has a match with Marshall at the M-66 Bowl.

In middle school sports, last night in girl’s basketball, Bronson hosted Three Rivers in the opening round of the St. Joe County Tournament. Bronson won the eighth grade game 29-to-16 with 12 points for Kirin Cekander. Three Rivers won the seventh grade game 28-to-15. Jill Pyles had 10 points for Bronson.
