COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - The regular season wraps up for girl’s varsity basketball teams around the area tonight, while the boy’s still have one week left, and Coldwater’s annual freshman basketball tournament also gets underway next week.
First up, in freshman and junior varsity action last night, Coldwater swept its four games against rival Sturgis. The Coldwater JV boys topped the Trojans 40-29. Grant Maurer had 14 points and Lucas Stempien finished with 9.
The freshman beat Sturgis 49-39. Blaze Watson had 15 points and 5 rebounds, Zach DeMeester had 14 points and 7 rebounds, and Michael Magocs finished with 12 points and 5 rebounds. The freshmen play in the annual Exchange Club tournament next week.
On the road, the Coldwater JV girl’s beat Sturgis 40-23. Andrea Sowles lead the way with 10 points and 3 rebounds. Kaitlyn Vella had 9 points and 5 rebounds, and Kylei Philson had 7 points. The JV team finished the year with an 11-9 record.
The freshman girls finished the year 7-13 with a 44-11 victory over Sturgis. Allison Germann had 10 points and 6 steals, Shelby Bowers had 10 points and 4 rebounds, and Hannah Miler had 7 points and 7 rebounds.
On tonight’s schedule, it’s Hall of Fame Induction Night and the conclusion of Cardinal Week as Coldwater hosts Sturgis for a girls and boys doubleheader. The girl’s game gets underway at 5:45 pm. Bob Bates, Julie Klein, and Doug Mitmesser will then be inducted into the Coldwater Athletic Hall of Fame in ceremonies between games. The boy’s varsity contest will follow.
The girls will host Harper Creek Monday night for a first round district game at 7 pm. Also on the boys basketball schedule tonight, Union City is at Concord, Quincy will host Athens, and Bronson plays at Centreville. The Bronson girl’s will also play at Centreville.
