UNDATED, (WTVB) - Happy 175th Birthday Michigan! Michigan's admittance into the Union in 1837 had been delayed two years by the dispute and near war with Ohio over Toledo. The compromise had the federal government give Michigan the part of Wisconsin we now know as the Upper Peninsula.
Michigan, affectionately referred to by many residents as the mitten, became the 26th state to join the union. Today more than nine-point-eight-million residents inhabit the Great Lakes State. Michigan is famous for its watery landscape, with eleven-thousand inland lakes and more than 36-thousand miles of streams and rivers.
