COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - Fireworks complaint calls into Branch County 9-1-1 picked up over the weekend. Some communities in Southwest Michigan are reconsidering holding their Fireworks shows on the Fourth of July if they figure it’s too dry and too dangerous. Coldwater still plans on proceeding with its show on Wednesday night at Heritage Park.
Fire investigators today are checking reports that a Catholic Church fire in West Michigan may have been sparked by fireworks. Many showed up for services at St. Mary’s Magdalene in Kentwood yesterday morning, only to learn that it had caught fire overnight and much of the sanctuary destroyed. Neighbors say they heard fireworks until well past midnight. The fire was first reported at about 1A.M.
Kentwood has restrictions on the use of fireworks and if they were the cause and Police find out who was launching them near the church, citations could be issued, perhaps even charges.
