The Tigers topped Tampa Bay 5-to-3 yesterday afternoon with Detroit taking 3 out of 4 from the Rays and finishing their 10-game road trip with a 5-and-5 record. Austin Jackson and Prince Fielder each had an RBI single in the sixth inning to push the Tigers ahead after the Rays had tied the game at 3-all in the bottom of the fifth.
Drew Smyly picked up the win to improve to 3-and-3. He allowed 3 hits and 3 runs over five innings. Jose Valverde nailed down his 15th save in 18 opportunities with a perfect ninth. Detroit returned home just a game under .500 at 39-and-40 with 7 games coming up against the fourth and fifth place teams in the Central Division.
Fielder will be the starting first baseman for the American League in the All-Star game coming up a week from tomorrow in Kansas City. The All-Star squads were announced yesterday. Joining Fielder on the American League squad from Detroit are Justin Verlander and Miguel Cabrera. The Tigers tonight start a 4-game series against the Twins.
Third place Detroit is 3 games back in the Central after the first place White Sox lost 4-to-2 to the Yankees. And the Cubs completed a three game sweep of the Astros, beating Houston 3-to-0 at Wrigley Field.
