Lansing (WTVB) American flags are a big seller this time of year, but many people don't know that copies of the Stars and Stripes are made here in Michiganby state prisoners. Inmates at a facility in the Upper Peninsula sew together American flags, which are sold in outlets across the United States. Michael Green, a coordinator for the flag program, says the intent of the project is to provide inmates the opportunity to learn employment skills so that when they get back to society they are able to look for work and hopefully find a job and not go back behind bars..
Green says all profits from the sale of the flags are put back in the program.
