COLDWATER (WTVB) In summer league baseball, Thursday was the opening day of the 2012 Michigan 14-and-under Sandy Koufax State Tournament being hosted by Coldwater. 10 games were played Thursday, with 6 contests in Coldwater and 4 in Fremont, Indiana, with the action continuing through Saturday afternoon when the championship will be decided at Lowe Field in Coldwater. The host team, the Coldwater Redbirds, split their 2 games Thursday. In their opener, Coldwater defeated the Southwest Tigers of the detroit Police Athletic League 7-5 behind the 3-hit pitching of Braytn Rzepka. He went the distance with 6 strikeouts and 4 walks over 7 innings while allowing just one earned run. Austin Krzeminski had 3 singles and scored a run. Jake Osborne had a single, double, and an RBI, and Brend. In game two, Coldwater lost to the Hitters Edge of Fremont 14-12. Brandon Lewis took the loss for the Redbirds. Caleb Drumm had a single, triple, and 3 RBI's, while Spangler also had a single and rtriple and Nick Shaw had a signle, double, and scored twice. Krezminski added 2 singles and scored a run. Coldwater plays again today at 11 this morning and 6:30 tonight with both games at Borden Field at Heritage Park. Other games are happening at the Heritage Diamond Number One as well as Fremont. The top 3 teams from the 10 team event get bids to the Sandy Koufax Regional in Rockford, Illinois.
