COLDWATER (WTVB) A weekend drowning in Branch County took the life of a Canton, Michigan man. It happened early Saturday afternoon at Coldwater Lake. Sheriff’s Deputies were called around 12:15 p.m. and told that a man was in the water and beneath the surface. While en route to the scene, they learned the victim was out of the water and upon arrival, found CPR being administered by Lakeland Fire and Lifecare Ambulance. However, 72-year old Leo Bronikowski was pronounced dead at about 12:50. Deputies found out that Bronikowski had been swimming at what is know at the lake as the “sunken island” with his daughter, granddaughter and great-grandson and with their boat anchored near them. Because of some windy conditions, the boat began to drift away and Bronikowski swam after it. The victim’s daughter attempted to stop him, but he kept going and slipped beneath the surface of the water a short time later. Several bystanders and boats assisted with locating him and brought him to shore. It was estimated he was beneath the water 10-to-20 minutes in 10-to-20 feet of water.
