COLDWATER (WTVB) - The highlight of the Coldwater summer league baseball season starts today with the city hosting for the 43rd time the annual Mickey Mantle North Central Regional. Eight teams, including the host Coldwater Redbirds, will be competing in the double elimination tournament with games at Lowe Field as well as at Borden Field at Heritage Park. There are four first round games today, beginning with a 3:30 contest at Borden Field, where another game is set for 6 p.m. Lowe Field’s first game happens at five o’clock and then the Coldwater Redbirds conclude the opening day schedule with a 7:30 game tonight against the Mid Michigan Tigers. The seven teams visiting Coldwater are classified as travel, all-star teams, with players from a region and many different communities and schools. The host Redbirds, with a 12-and-16 record, are the exception. Coldwater head coach Tom Duke says their record doesn’t totally indicate the overall type of ball they’ve played so far this summer with four of those loses coming by a single run. Duke says the Redbirds absolutely must execute and not have any lapses because teams in regional will make you pay quickly for sloppy play. The tournament continues through Saturday and if necessary Sunday with the winner moving on to the Mickey Mantle World Series inMcKinney,Texas.
