Comerica Park will be rocking this weekend as the Tigers host a showdown series against the division leading White Sox with Detroit in position to take over the top spot in the Central after their 5-to-1 victory yesterday over the visiting Angels. Max Scherzer pitched seven strong innings with nine strikeouts while giving up just one run on three hits to win his third straight decision and improve to 9-and-5 on the season. Alex Avila clubbed a two-run homer and Miguel Cabrera added a solo shot for Detroit, which has won 10 of its last 12 games to climb within a game-and-a-half of the White Sox, who lost 3-to-1 Thursday at Boston.
The Tigers tonight have their ace, Justin Verlander, going to the hill against the White Sox. These two teams have split their 8 meetings so far this season, although Detroit has won 12 of the last 15 in their matchups at Comerica Park. And the Cubs yesterday afternoon completed a solid 5-and-1 home stand with a 4-to-2 win over the Marlins at Wrigley Field.
