COLDWATER (WTVB) - In summer league baseball, a team from Coldwater has accepted an offer to compete in the AABC Sandy Koufax 13-and-under World Series which starts today at Bailey Park in Battle Creek. 20 teams from around the country, including the Coldwater squad coached by Dave Bach, are guaranteed four pool play games, with two each today and tomorrow. Coldwater will be playing teams from New Jersey, New York, Illinois, and Michigan. The top eight teams advance to single elimination bracket play on Friday with the title game scheduled for Saturday. Meanwhile, Coldwater has received high marks for its hospitality in holding last week’s AABC Mickey Mantle North Central Regional, the 43rd year Coldwater has hosted the tournament. The coach of the Great Lakes Lightning, one of the Michigan teams that played in the regional said “It was by far the best experience we have had as a baseball team.  I know your incredible work ethic and selflessness in ensuring that the players get the very best conditions available often go unrecognized, but in this instance, I just want to say thank you.  You did a great job for the AABC and it was a privilege to participate”. The Great Lakes Lightning organization said it would be making a contribution to the field renovations in Coldwater. Also, an Illinois team, the Ottawa Mustangs, said “we would like to thank you for your hospitality and hard work in running a great tournament. The diamonds were beautiful and in excellent condition and everyone couldn't have been nicer.” The winner of the North Central Regional championship game on Sunday at Lowe Field, the Michigan Bulls, a Detroit area all-star squad, advanced to the Mickey Mantle 16-and-under World Series which begins a week from today in McKinney, Texas.
