LANSING (WTVB) - Some of you will be waking up this morning to higher gas prices. There has been a jump at the pump of around a dime a gallon but some stations spiked as much as 30 cents to as high as $3.65 a gallon in Southwest Michigan apparently because of a brief fire at the BP refinery in Whiting, Indiana, the largest such operation in the Midwest. Reuters is reporting the coker fire may have impacted production in that section of the plant by as much as 30%.
The Governor has issued an energy emergency for the next two weeks because of a gasoline shortage caused by a leaky pipeline in Wisconsin. It’s created fuel shortages in parts of the Upper Peninsula. The Governor’s order will lift limits on truckers making runs into that part of the state, allowing them to drive further and longer.
