BATTLE CREEK (WTVB) - In summer league baseball, the Coldwater Redbirds Sandy Koufax team played a pair of first round games yesterday in the AABC Sandy Koufax 13-and-under World Series which started Wednesday at Bailey Park in Battle Creek. The Redbirds, who received a late invitation to compete in the tournament, dropped their opener 6-to-2 to a New Jersey team, the Hillsdale Hawks. Collin Torrey pitched for Coldwater and gave up two earned runs on 4 hits with seven strikeouts. Torrey also helped his own cause with 2 hits, including a double, with a run scored. Bryce Barringer also had 2 hits with a run scored while Eric Bach added 2 hits as well for the Redbirds. In their second game, Coldwater fell 13-to-1 in a four inning contest to the Albany, New York Tri-City Bombers. Caleb Letendre went 2-for-2 for the Redbirds while Austin Butler was 1-for-2 with a run scored. Also adding a hit apiece in the loss were Bach and Barringer. Coldwater has two more contests today as each of the 20 teams in the event is guaranteed four pool play games. The top eight teams advance to single elimination bracket play tomorrow with the title game scheduled for Saturday.
