BATTLE CREEK (WTVB) - In summer league baseball, the Coldwater Redbirds Sandy Koufax team earned an exciting win yesterday as they concluded their appearance in the AABC Sandy Koufax 13-and-under World Series at Bailey Park in Battle Creek. The Redbirds split a pair of games on Thursday, leaving them with a 1-and-3 record in the pool play phase of the event that wraps up tomorrow. Coldwater dropped its first game yesterday, losing 10-to-7 to the Springfield, Illinois Fury. Eric Bach turned in a solid relief effort for the Redbirds, pitching the final five innings, allowing one run on 3 hits with 3 strikeouts and 2 walks. Offensively, Bryce Barringer, Sam DeMeester, Collin Torrey, Austin Butler, and Conner Covert had two hits apiece, including doubles for Barringer, Butler, and Covert. The Redbirds then scored an 8-to-5 victory in their final game over the Gross Pointe, Michigan Redhawks, the top seeded team in their pool. On the mound for Coldwater was Sam DeMeester, pitching all seven innings with a 5-hitter, including 5 strikeouts and 2 walks. DeMeester helped his own cause with 2 hits and 2 runs scored. Conner Covert had 3 hits, Bryce Barringer had a double and a triple while Austin Butler and Kameron Miller added 2 hits apiece. Butler scored the go-ahead run on Barringer’s triple as the Redbirds put three runs on the board in the top of the seventh to break a 5-5 tie and then DeMeester shutdown the Redhawks with a 1-2-3 bottom of the inning to close out the victory. A dozen teams were eliminated yesterday with the top eight teams advancing to today’s single elimination bracket play with the championship to be decided on Saturday.
