COVERT, MI (WKZO) -- The Palisades Nuclear Plant went thru another emergency shut down last evening after it sprung a leak. It was not a radiation leak, but a water leak in the tank that holds the borated water used to flood the reactor core in case of a coolant loss.
The tank had been leaking for the past several days, but the plant kept operating until it reached the point when it was deemed no longer operable. They plan is to drain the tank, plug the leak, refill the tank and resume operations. That will take at least a little time. It holds 300-thousand gallons of water.
It’s just the latest in a string of reactor shut downs due to mechanical and human failures that has prompted the NRC to declare it one of the four worst plants in the nation.
