Austin Jackson finished 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBI’s to back eight strong innings from Justin Verlander as the Tigers clipped the Cubs 5-to-3 yesterday afternoon to take the rubber game of the 3-game series at Wrigley Field. Verlander fanned eight and allowed just two runs on five hits to improve to 6-and-4 on the season. Jose Valverde gave up a run in the ninth, but held on to register his 13th save.
The victory allowed Detroit to gain another game on the Central Division leading White Sox, who lost 5-to-3 last night at St. Louis.
The third place Tigers trail Chicago by 4 games with second place Cleveland a game-and-a-half back. Tonight, Detroit continues interleague play, beginning a 6-game home stand, starting with a 3-game series against the Colorado Rockies, who have lost 8 straight.
Tiger’s pitcher Drew Smyly has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a blister on his left hand.Detroitcalled up infielder Ryan Raburn from Triple-A Toledo in time for yesterday's game against the Cubs to fill Smyly's roster spot and Raburn had two hits.
The Tigers also announced starting pitcher Doug Fister is set to come off the disabled list and will take the mound against the Rockies tomorrow night. Fister had been on the D-L since May 28th with a muscle strain on his left side.
