Tiger Woods had a successful first round at the U.S. Open inSan Francisco, shooting a one-under 69 at the Olympic Club to sit three shots off the pace set by first-round leader Michael Thompson. Four players are tied with Woods for second place.
Woods’ partners in the featured threesome, Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson, both struggled. Mickelson, the five-time U.S. Open runner-up, shot a 76 while Masters champion Watson had a 78.
Defending champion Rory McIlroy recorded a 77, 12 shots worse than his opening-round 65 a year ago. And the course also beat up world number-one ranked Luke Donald, who finished with a 79.
