COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - A trio of former Branch County high school athletes has been honored for their achievements at Kellogg Community College in Battle Creek, where the school on Monday announced their 2011-2012 athletic awards. Danielle Fraley ofUnion Citywas named Most Valuable Player of the Women’s Basketball team and was also honorable mention All-Conference. Fraley was also Academic All-Conference and Academic All-State.
Seth Szafranski of Coldwater, who played on the KCC baseball team, and Dani Thorpe of Union City, a member of the school’s volleyball team, were also both Academic All-State and All-Conference. In addition, Thorpe received a National Junior College Athletic Association award for Exemplary Academic Achievement.
Coldwater high school junior BreeAnn Spangler will be competing this month in the AAU Junior Volleyball Nationals in Orlando, Florida. Spangler is a member of a Kalamazoo based club which will be playing in the 18-year old club division tournament which has attracted more than 140 teams from around the country. BreeAnn leaves for Orlando on Friday and will be there until a week from Saturday.
In local summer league softball action last night, the Coldwater 14-and-under Northwoods Coffee Company team was a 21-to-6 winner at home over Burr Oak. Stacy Guzy earned the victory on the mound with a one-hitter. Coldwater improved its record to 8-and-0 and will host Colon tomorrow night at 6:30.
