Quintin Berry grounded a bases-loaded single up the middle in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Tigers a 2-to-1 win over the Cardinals yesterday afternoon at Comerica Park
The victory overSt. Louisin the rubber game of the 3-game series gave the Tigers their fourth straight series win. Joaquin Benoit stranded a pair of runners in the top of the 10th to earn the victory and Prince Fielder hit a fourth-inning homer for the Tigers.Detroitstarter Jacob Turner, who was called up from Triple-A Toledo prior to the game, made his season debut and the 21-year old right-hander allowed just one run on four hits and five walks with three strikeouts over five innings.
The only St. Louis run came on a fifth-inning sacrifice fly. On the play, Detroit outfielder Don Kelly made the catch on the shallow fly to right, but his momentum carried him into the railing in foul territory, preventing a throw to home. Kelly suffered a left knee contusion and was later removed and is now being listed as day-to-day.
The win leaves the third place Tigers 2-and-a-half games behind the Central Division leading Indians and 2 games back of the second place White Sox.Cleveland, the White Sox and the Cubs were all idle yesterday.
Detroit continues inter-league play tonight on the road, opening a 3-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
