Marcos Ambrose is on a roll in Sprint Cup Series qualifying. Prior to last weekend's race at Michigan International Speedway, Ambrose had not claimed a pole in 133 starts, but now the Australian has back-to-back qualifying wins. Ambrose yesterday took the top starting position for Sunday's Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway.
Jeff Gordon, who was the last driver to qualify Friday on theNorthern California road course, earned the outside pole. Gordon holds the series record for most wins on road courses with nine, including five atSonoma. Gordon's teammate, Jimmie Johnson, qualified third, while Greg Biffle took the fourth spot. Matt Kenseth, the current point’s leader will start ninth.
Dale Earnhardt Jr., who ended his four-year, 143-race winless streak last Sunday at M-I-S, qualified 19th. You can hear live race coverage from Sonoma on AM 1590 and FM 95.5 beginning at 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon.
