 In Branch County high school sports, last night in state tournament volleyball action, Bronson and Reading were the semi-final winners in the Union City Class-C district and will face off at 7 o’clock tonight for the district title.

Meanwhile, Coldwater will take on top-ranked Gull Lake tonight in the semi-finals of the Class-A Gull Lake District. The Coldwater match is the second semi-final contest and is scheduled for 6:30 and we’ll have live coverage from Gull Lake on the radio with Sean Watson and Al Rackocy with their broadcast beginning at 6:15. The winners advance to Saturday’s 10 a.m. championship match.

Last night at Union City, in the opening semi-final contest, Reading eliminated Quincy 3-to-1. Quincy took the first game 25-17 before the Rangers swept to victory in the next three sets 25-18, 25-21, 28-26. Then it was Bronson versus Union City and Bronson blanked the host Lady Chargers 3-to-0. The game one score was 25-12 followed by a pair of 25-21 victories for Bronson, which was ranked 8th in the state in this week’s Class-C coaches poll. Skyler Sobeski had a team-high 14 kills for Bronson while Kassidy Bystry led the way in digs with 15. Emily Mayes had 6 blocks and Alexa Ratkowski had 30 assists.

In Union City’s season ending loss, Marissa Mead and Haley Harty had 13 digs apiece with 12 digs for Riley Smith while it was 4 kills apiece for Martha Merchant,

Brooke Johnson, and Brittney Keller. Johnson added 3 blocks and Jasmine McIntosh had 10 assists. Union City closed out with a 25-17-and-4 record.
