BRONSO, MI (WTVB) - Three people have died in two separate car accidents in the area with a double fatal in Branch County and the other in Steuben County, Indiana and there was a third crash Thursday with injuries that tied up traffic on I-69 south of Coldwater. Branch County deputies say 57-year old Michael Wielgos of Bronson was killed instantly when the car he was driving ran off the road and struck a tree along M-86 near Lyter Road in Matteson Township.
It happened around 1:30 pm and police believe Wielgos may have suffered from a possible medical condition. A passenger in the car, 60-year old Patti Kay Schell, also of Bronson, was trapped for a time in the vehicle before being freed with the Jaws of Life used by Bronson firemen. She was flown from the scene to Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo where she passed away early today.
The accident remains under investigation.
And early today, east of Angola, Indiana, deputies say a car ran off US 20 and rolled several times in a field and burst into flames. There was one occupant in the vehicle and the name of the victim is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of next of kin. The accident was reported around 1 a.m. today.
Details of the other injury accident on I-69 near Pearl Road that involved a rental truck and happened around 4:30 have not yet been released by Michigan State Police.
