Number-14 Michigan State fell behind by 16 in the first half and was on the comeback trail after the break but the Spartan’s rally fizzled down the stretch and they were upset by unranked Connecticut 66-to-62 in the season-opening Armed Forces Classic at Ramstein Air Base in Germany. Keith Appling had 17 points and five assists for M-S-U. Kevin Ollie won his first game as the Huskies' head coach. This was the first season opener for U-Conn without Jim Calhoun at the helm since 1985. Michigan State returns to action Tuesday night against #7 Kansas at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. Fifth-ranked Michigan last night scored 100 points in a game for the first time since 2007 as the Wolverines won their first game, smashing Slippery Rock 100-to-62 at Crisler Arena. Tim Hardaway Junior had a double-double for Michigan with 25 points and 10 rebounds while point guard Trey Burke finished with 21 points. The Wolverines’ next game is Monday night at home against IUPUI in a first round NIT Season Tip-Off contest. Western Michigan tips off its season this afternoon with a road game against Cornell.
