COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, the annual Coldwater volleyball awards banquet was last night and the honors included senior BreeAnn Spangler being selected Most Valuable Player of this year’s varsity team while also being the recipient of the coach’s Leadership award. Other team honors went to Lauren Outwater-Best Blocker; Janie Marso & Paige Holicki-Most Improved Players; Meghan Schorfhaar & Darby Kahler-Best Back Row Defensive Players; and Morgan Klein-The Cardinal Award.
There were also a dozen other Coach’s Awards presented by coach Gene Pensari; "Team First" Award: Janie Marso; Most Athletic: Lauren Outwater; Most Dependable: Jordan Shiery; Best Practice Player: Sina Reimann ;"Will To Win" Award: Morgan Klein Most Potential: Shelby Bowers; Most Coachable: Ashley Chase; Best Outside Hitter: Paige Holicki; "Eye Of The Tiger" Award: Darby Kahler; Up And Coming Award: Kenzie Galloway; Great Teammate Award: Makayla Bendele; and Most Competitive: Meghan Schorfhaar.
BreeAnn Spangler was named to the SMAC East First Team with Lauren Outwater selected to the Second Team and Morgan Klein Honorable Mention. Named to the All Region Team were Spangler, Schorfhaar, Outwater and Klein with Marso All Region Honorable Mention.
This year’s team had an outstanding record of 47-7-and-2 and named next year’s captains were Morgan Klein and Meghan Schorfhaar. The MHSAA state volleyball tournament wraps up this week, starting with tonight’s quarterfinals and then the action shifts to Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek with the Final Four beginning on Thursday with the four championship matches on Saturday.

In middle school sports yesterday, in boy’s basketball, in eighth grade action, Coldwater played at home against Harper Creek. Coldwater won the “A” game 37-to-32 with 10 points for Collin Warner and 9 rebounds for Eric Bach. The Cardinals also won the “B” game 34-to-24 with ten points for Austin Butler.
In the seventh grade “A” game at Harper Creek, the host Beavers beat Coldwater 38-to-29. Brady Huckhusen had 18 points for the Cardinals. Also yesterday, the Bronson seventh grade team opened their season with a 20-to-12 loss to White Pigeon. Brenden Bell led Bronson with 4 points.
