UNDATED (WTVB) - Two days after Veteran’s Day, a new report says poor record keeping is hurting military veterans, who must often go to great lengths to prove they've served the country in order to receive benefits.
An investigation by the "Seattle Times" and the public interest news organization Propublica found that many service members' records were lost when the military switched from paper to digital records in the early 1990s. That's affected veterans of the Gulf War, but veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan are also running up against the problem of lost records.
This can result in vets not being able to produce the documentation they need for basic benefits such as disability.
