WASHINGTON D.C. (WKZO) -- There is plenty of blame to go around as a congressional committee looked into the Fungal Meningitis outbreak this week. Republicans are blaming the FDA, Democrats are blaming Congress for not giving the FDA the authority to regulate Compounding Pharmacies and everyone is blaming Massachusetts for not paying attention.
Congressman Fred Upton says lives have been lost unnecessarily. Barry Cadden, Co-founder of the Compounding Lab isn’t talking. He pled the 5th to each question. The FDA is requesting oversight authority, to eliminate the grey-areas in regulation.
The numbers continued to rise even as the hearing continued. 8 have died in Michigan and 32-nationwide as a result of the contamination. There are now 462 in 19-states that have become ill.
