COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - That’s the message from the Health Department in Coldwater as they encourage you to quit smoking for good beginning today during the Great American Smokeout. Nearly 45 million Americans smoke cigarettes.
Georgia State University's Institute of Public Health Director Michael Eriksen says the main message of this annual event is that it's never too late to quit. Eriksen says even if you smoke for 40 years, quitting will have an immediate effect on your risk for heart attacks and other types of cardiovascular diseases.
Eriksen says about 70-percent of the smokers in this country want to quit and about half of them have tried to give up cigarettes in the past year. They have resources to help quit online at Cancer.org/Smokeout.
