COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, Wednesday was a proud day for the Spangler family and the Coldwater volleyball program. Coldwater senior BreeAnn Spangler yesterday signed a national letter of intent to play Division One volleyball with the Sycamores of Indiana State University. On hand for the signing at CHS were BreeAnn’s parents, Randy and Karen Spangler, Coldwater varsity head coach Gene Pensari, assistant coach Kelsey Closson, and former long time Coldwater volleyball coach Kent Neitzert.
The MHSAA volleyball Final Four tips off this afternoon and continues through Saturday at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek. Three area teams still competing for a state title are Concord of the Big Eight and Mendon of the St. Joe Valley in Class-C, and six time defending Class-D champion Battle Creek St. Philip.
In football, 2011 Coldwater High School graduate Tyler Guzy was among the players recognized this week when the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association announced its league honors. Guzy, a sophomore safety at Trine University, was named to the MIAA all-league second team on defense. The fourth round of the MHSAA football playoffs is on tap for this weekend with the semi-finals Friday night and Saturday afternoon. The winners will then hit the road to Ford Field in Detroit where eight championship games will be played on Thanksgiving weekend. SMAC East champion Harper Creek in Division Three and Constantine in Division Six are the two area teams remaining in the football playoff picture.

It was a busy night in middle school boy’s basketball with Coldwater sweeping four games from Battle Creek Lakeview. The Cardinals hosted Lakeview for the eighth grade contests. Coldwater beat the Spartans in the “A” game 27-to-19 with 10 points for Zach Murphy while Jacob Beckhusen had 6 rebounds and 4 steals to go along with his 2 points.
The Cardinals took the “B” game 36-to-20 with 12 points for Austin Butler. In the seventh grade action at Lakeview, leading the Coldwater “A” team to victory was Brady Beckhusen with 12 points. The Cardinals won the “B” game 28-to-17 with 8 points for Ben Fagen.
Also yesterday, Bronson split its games at home with Mar-Lee. The eighth grade Vikings beat Mar-Lee 44-to-20 with 13 points and 7 rebounds for Justin Robinson. Mar-Lee won the seventh grade contest 33-to-20. Ethan Cossairt led Bronson with 10 points.
