MARSHALL, MI (WTVB) - A jury in Calhoun County has found Lauren O’Melay guilty of second degree murder in the shooting death of Larry Denniston. The two men had apparently fought over the fate of a piece of property they both owned for years. There was a confrontation on the property and Denniston ended up with five bullets in his body. O’Melay testified that he was just defending himself after Denniston attacked him. The jury didn’t believe that, but they also didn’t believe the prosecution’s claim that it was a premeditated murder. Prosecutors say that O’Melay shot Denniston on the property and then dumped his body along a remote roadway in Branch County.
At age 60, any sentence is likely to be a life sentence. He will learn how many years he will serve on December 14th.
