Meningitis outbreak growing and evolving

LANSING (WKZO) The case count continues to climb in the ongoing multi-state fungal meningitis outbreak, past the period when they expected most new cases to turn up, and the nature of the outbreak is changing. Instead of cases of meningitis, State Health officials report they are seeing more epidural abscesses.

That is defined as an inflammation that involves a collection of pus between the brain and the spinal cord and the bones of the skull or spine.

It can create pressure that has to be surgically relieved.

At the latest count there were 64-meningitis cases, and 84-cases of epidural abscess, seven joint infections and one stroke.

The Michigan Department of Health is granting emergency certificates of need to St. Joseph Mercy in Ann Arbor for the additional equipment and surgical facilities they need. They continue to evaluate and treat more patients related to the outbreak than any other facility nationally.

The CDC expected the incubation period would be between 1 to 4 weeks, but they now plan to monitor for several months now that new cases have appeared after that period.
