High school volleyball champs crowned, football finals are this weekend at Ford Field

by

BRONSON, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, the break between the fall and winter sports schedule for county teams continues with the action resuming a week from tomorrow when the girl’s basketball season tips-off with Bronson at home against Homer.

The MHSAA Fall Season has two more days of competition coming up and that’s the eight state football title games on Friday and Saturday at Ford Field. Just one area school was able to advance to the finals as Constantine defeated Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central 36-to-14 Saturday in a Division Six semi final game at Harper Creek. Meanwhile, SMAC East Champion Harper Creek had its season end when the Beavers lost their Division Three semi-final 28-to-7 to Orchard Lake St. Mary’s.

The volleyball season ended Saturday at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek where four state champions were crowned, including Battle Creek St. Philip, as the Tigers won their seventh straight title, defeating Beal City in the Class-D championship match 3-to-0. The other title winners were Macomb Dakota in Class-A, Lake Odessa Lakewood in Class-B, and Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central in Class-C.

Today on the Coach’s Corner, it’s Coldwater’s new varsity girl’s Basketball coach Ken Smoker. Coldwater opens its season at home December Fourth against Battle Creek Central. The Coldwater boys also start their season that night on the road against Central.
