Kalamazoo expert says Christmas shopping isn't what it used to be

KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- In the never-ending competition between retailers and consumers, both sides are becoming more sophisticated and better equipped to try to out-strategize and out-maneuver the other.

The National Retail Federation is predicting a slight increase in Black Friday sales of about 4%, but they will have to work to get there according to Marcia LeRoy, an instructor in the WMU Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. She says shoppers have been hardened by hard times, and they are more savvy than ever.

She says that they work harder at saving money than ever before and for some Black Friday has become more than just a shopping trip. Its become an annual family event that begins with a week of planning, and the application of sophisticated shopping aps on smart phones. And that of course spills over into the rest of the holiday shopping season.

We haven’t seen any hard numbers yet, but anecdotally most managers say sales were up.
