COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - Branch County voters this month rejected a millage increase to fund the Sheriff’s Department Road Patrol and at yesterday’s County Board of Commissioners meeting, citizens spoke out again like they did 2 weeks ago, pleading with the Commission not to go ahead with plans to lay off up to a dozen deputies by January First.
That would leave just three deputies and 3 sergeants for the road services, basically eliminating 24/7 patrol coverage. The county’s spending plan for next year includes a million dollars in cuts for the sheriff’s department. The deputy layoffs don’t become official until the 2013 general fund budget is adopted sometime next month. More discussion on the road patrol issues is expected when the county commission’s finance committee meets in special session on Friday.
