Battle CREEK, MI (WKZO) -- Battle Creek Police say two people are dead and one hospitalized after a single-vehicle crash on the Cereal City’s near south side. They say the three were headed westbound, and possibly speeding on Upton Ave. when for some reason the vehicle went out of control, went off the road and struck a tree at Caroline Street. Two were dead at the scene and the third airlifted to a Kalamazoo emergency room for treatment. It remains under investigation.
Just a few blocks away at about the same time 2AM a driver noticed flames coming from a home on Van Buren. He called 911 and then alerted two adults inside who managed to escape out a second story window, but unable to reach a young girl who was in another second story bedroom. The first fire crews on the scene were able to pull her out. She was sent to the hospital suffering from a severe case of smoke inhalation. Fire investigators say the fire appears suspicious and an arson investigation is underway.
