UNION TOWNSHIP, BRANCH COUNTY (WTVB) - A Bronson man suffered serious injuries over the weekend in a strange pickup truck accident in Branch County. 22-year old Nicholas Beckwith had to be flown out from the scene to a Kalamazoo hospital for treatment following the Saturday afternoon incident in Union Township. Sheriff’s Deputies say Beckwith was driving northbound on Burlington Road when the load in the bed of the truck became unstable. A witness told authorities  Beckwith exited the pickup while it was still moving in an attempt to secure the load and fell onto the roadway. 19-year Shelby Nicole Smith, also of Bronson, was a passenger in the truck. The news release didn’t say if she may have taken to the wheel of the truck while Beckwith exited the pickup. Beckwith is listed in fair condition today at Bronson hospital. Deputies also say they aren’t sure whether or not alcohol may have been a factor in the accident that remains under investigation.
