LANSING (WTVB) - Michigan State Police are taking issue with reports this week from the group that successfully got Michigan's mandatory motorcycle helmet law repealed concerning the number of motorcycle fatalities.  In a statement, Anne Readett of the Office of Highway Safety Planning within the State Police Department said the injury and fatality information for the current year "is provisional and changes on a daily basis."

The group ABATE claims the number of motorcycle deaths have fallen since bikers were allowed to go without helmets earlier this year.  Readett says through August 31st, 91 deaths have occurred in motorcycle accidents compared with 89 for the same time period in 2011, and incapacitating injuries have risen by 14-percent. The new law went into effect on April 12th of this year.
