Coldwater Volleyball Sweeps To Win, Big Soccer Match-Ups Tonight


COLDWATER (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports last night, in volleyball, Coldwater cruised to a 3-to-0 win at Battle Creek Central. The visiting Lady Cardinals beat the Bearcats 25-4, 25-11, 25-5. Paige Holicki had a team-high 7 kills, Kenzie Galloway had 4 blocks and Darby Kahler had 7 digs. Coldwater improved to 4-and-1 in league play and 20-5-and-1 overall. Their next action is Saturday in a tournament at St. John’s. Coldwater also swept the j-v and freshman matches, winning both 2-to-0. In the j-v match, Mina Wellett had 5 kills and Samantha Dygert had 5 digs. The j-v record is 21-7-and-1. And for the Coldwater freshman, Sammi Pool and Katelyn Stanton each had 2 aces while Maggie Pool had 3 kills as they improved their record to 15-4-and-3.

Also in volleyball, Bronson was a 3-to-0 winner at White Pigeon. The victory moved the Lady Vikings to 5-and-0 in the St. Joe Valley and 21-9-and-5 overall. Emily Mays had 8 kills and 3 blocks, Kylei Ratkowski had 17 digs, Mallorie Bassage had 4 aces and Alexa Ratkowski had 25 assists. Bronson plays Saturday at the Concord Invitational. And in j-v volleyball from Tuesday, Union City was on the road to beat Springport 2-to-0. Katie Wood had 12 kills, Emma Hoppe had 3 aces and Bailee White had 7 assists.

Yesterday in boys tennis, Coldwater traveled to Pennfield for a tri-meet and the Cardinals defeated both the host Panthers and Battle Creek Central. Winning for Coldwater at first through fourth singles were Derek Sammons, Nathan Waterbury, Triston Kosmerick and Alex Mason along with John Sammons and Nick Waterbury at first doubles, Ben Hicks and Jake Fielding at second doubles, Nate Withington and Chris Chartrand at third doubles and Buddy Bailey and Dylan LInklater at fourth doubles. Coming up Saturday, it’s the SMAC League meet. In j-v tennis, the Cardinals wrapped up their season Wednesday with a 4-to-2 victory at home over Parma Western. Winners for Coldwater were Kumaran Arivoli and Austin Hodson at first and second singles along with Keagan Dwyer and Nolan Duda at first doubles and Chris Bowden and Jacob Osborne at second doubles. The j-v team finishes with a 10-and-3 record.

On tonight’s high school schedule, in boy’s soccer, Coldwater plays at home against Sturgis in a second round SMAC Gold Division League tournament match. The j-v game is at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity at 6:45. Also, Quincy has an ISL match at home against Hillsdale Academy beginning at 5:30. Week Seven of the football season kicks off tonight with reserve games including Coldwater’s junior varsity and freshman teams at home against Battle Creek Central. Also in j-v action, Quincy is at Reading, Bronson hosts Centreville, and it’s Union City at Jonesville. Today on the Coach’s Corner, it’s Union City football coach Chris Davis.
