KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Following the first debate to become Kalamazoo County's next prosecuting attorney, candidates Scott Pierangeli and Jeff Getting are setting their sights to the pavement, going door-to-door in efforts to urge voters for their support this November.
The debate, that took place Wednesday evening at the MLive/Kalamazoo Gazette headquarters in downtown Kalamazoo, drew in a crowd of less than 50 which was mostly made up of the candidates’ respective families and close supporters.
One of the most memorable moments of Wednesday’s debate was the candidates’ answers to the question, “What key crime needs to be dealt with more severely in Kalamazoo County?” Democrat candidate Jeff Getting answered that methamphetamine users should face a harsher punishment and serve a longer sentence time for their crime. The answer that Republican candidate Pierangeli gave was in direct response to the increased rates of home invasions in Kalamazoo County. Pierangeli explained that, “Our home is supposed to be our safe place and having someone threaten that security cannot be tolerated in our community.” Pierangeli advocated that if elected, Kalamazoo County will work to achieve higher incarceration rates for home invaders.
