KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Hundreds of local dignitaries turned out to welcome Hark Orchids to Kalamazoo for an official groundbreaking ceremony and mini-Octoberfest.
The German firm is opening its first propagation plant on this side of the Atlantic in Kalamazoo, building a new 6-million dollar facility at the Midlink Business Park in Comstock Township.
SouthWest Michigan First’s Ron Kitchens says they are a perfect fit.An official with Hark Orchids says they picked Kalamazoo because of its workforce, the bedding plant industry, but also because of its festivals, recreational opportunities and welcoming business community, but it was mainly the passion of the people that brought them here.
They plan to start with 50-workers and grow from there as their Orchid cuttings mature. Their building will have the capacity to eventually double production.
After yesterday's groundbreaking they retreated into a big outdoor tent for beer on tap and German food.
