ATLANTA (WTVB) - The Centers for Disease Control says a steroid medication tied to at least five deaths from a rare fungal meningitis may have been given to people in 23 states, including Michigan.
If you haven’t gotten a shot for lower back pain lately, you have nothing to fear, and then it must be from a specific producer. Health officials say they have 6 confirmed cases in Michiganand more are expected, but none of them in this area. Nationally the numbers are 49 cases and 5 deaths in 6 states.
Dr. John Jernigan at the CDC says there is a fairly long incubation period, so over the next few weeks more cases are sure to appear. The rare meningitis has been linked to steroid shots distributed by a Massachusetts compounding pharmacy that has been shut down.
Michigan health officials have traced shipments from that pharmacy and none of them were shipped to SW Michigan, A clinic in Traverse City did get a batch. The three other shipments went to Grand Blanc, Brighton, and Warren.
