KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- 6th District Congressional Candidates Fred Upton and Mike O’Brien will meet on the WMU Campus this evening for one of their two scheduled debates before next month’s vote.
Upton is the familiar 13-term incumbent Republican and O’Brien is a relative unknown Democrat from Douglas who is running for his first elective office. It should be a lively debate because O’Brien has been critical of Upton and hasn’t been shy about saying why.
It will run from 7 to 8 this evening in room 3512 of Knauss Hall, or you can catch our live stream on our website WKZO.com.
The Second debate will take place in Buchanan in Berrien County on October 23rd.
While there will be two debates in the 6th Congressional District, Democratic Challenger Steve Pestka in the 3rd District says incumbent Justin Amash is refusing to go toe to toe with him. Pestka charges that Amash doesn’t appear to be doing much more than updating his postings on facebook, and while he has accepted every media invitation to a debate, Amash has refused.Because of redistricting, the 3rd District now includes Battle Creek for the first time, where they have had limited exposure to either candidate.
