LANSING (WTVB) - Governor Rick Snyder Tuesday signed several bills into law designed to assist seniors in Michigan, including one authored by State Senator Bruce Caswell. Senate Bill 990 is now law and it aims to ensure that senior citizens who are homeowners who temporarily reside in nursing homes or assisted living units can retain their Principal Residence Exemption on their property taxes. Caswell said seniors should not have to fear paying higher taxes at a time in their lives when they need to make important decisions about their health and well-being. The Governor also put his name on legislation to create a more thorough and effective nursing home inspection process. The measure includes several improvements to the review procedure, such as more timely revisits and responses to correction plans. It also requires that the inspection teams include a nurse, and provides for a grant award program for nursing homes that receive the highest quality rating
