BETHEL TOWNSHIP, BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) - The Branch County Sheriff’s Department believes speeding might have been the cause of a one car accident over the weekend that wrapped a Ford Focus around a tree in Batavia Township leaving the driver seriously injured. Deputies said 30-year old Samantha Ann Stayner of Bronson was headed west on Central Road east of Batavia Road when she lost control of her vehicle around 3:30 pm Saturday afternoon. Both Stayner and her 8-year old son were trapped in the car before being freed by firemen from the Bronson and Lakeland Fire Departments. They were transferred from the Community Health Center of Branch County to Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo, where the boy was treated and released while his mother is listed in critical condition. Deputies said alcohol was not a factor in the crash and that seat belts and a child restraint seat were used. The accident remains under investigation.
