In Branch County high school sports, in volleyball, Coldwater had a third place finish Saturday at the Saline Invitational. The Lady Cardinals defeated Port Huron 2-to-0 in the quarterfinals before falling to Temperance-Bedford 2-to-1 in the semi-finals. BreeAnn Spangler led Coldwater in kills with 55 and in blocks with 20 while Darby Kahler had a team-high 57 digs. Coldwater’s record is now 30-6-and-2. Tomorrow night, the Lady Cardinals are at home for a tri-meet with Bronson and Three Rivers and it’s also their fifth annual “Dig Pink” night benefiting cancer research. We’ll have live coverage on AM 1590 and FM 95.5 with the broadcast joining the action in progress at 6 p.m. Also in volleyball, Quincy had a 2-and-2 record at the Homer Invitational. In pool play, they beat Tekonsha and Camden-Frontier each in two games before losing 2-to-0 to Whiteford. Quincy was then elminated with a 2-to-0 loss to Pottersville in bracket play. Leaders for the Lady Orioles were Gaby Masson with 15 kills and 22 digs, Hannah Evans with 3 blocks, Baily Knaack and Bree Spalding each with 14 assists, and Jordan Kotwicki with 8 aces.
In junior varsity volleyball, Union City had a 3-1-and-1 record while advancing to the semi-finals of a tournament at Concord.Katie Wood had 34 kills, Rachel Grinnell had 10 blocks, and Bailee White had 23 assists and 10 aces. And in freshman volleyball, Coldwater advanced to the quarterfinals of the Sturgis Invitational before losing 2-to-1 to Gull Lake. Breanna Eddy had 22 kills, 9 blocks and 4 digs. Gabby Milnes had 19 kills and 6 aces. And Kendall Galloway had 35 digs and 11 assists.The freshman record is now 18-7-and-4.
In cross country, the Coldwater boy’s team had a sixth place finish Saturday at the Sturgis Kiwanis Invitational. Freshman Josh Evers led the Cardinals with a 23rd place medal showing. Coldwater did not field a full girl’s team, but had two medal winners with Becca Schott taking seventh place while Natalee Dally finished 21st. And Bronson was one of five schools at the Constantine Invitational with the boy’s taking third place while the girls finished second. Leading the boys were Matt Cosby in second place and Wesley Disbro in seventh place. In the girl’s race, Corissa Ross was second with Mariah Roberts seventh and Tana Shimp eighth.
On today’s high school schedule, in boy’s soccer, the state tournament kicks off including Coldwater at home for a Division Two district quarterfinal match against Three Rivers at 6:30 p.m. Coldwater is hosting the district this week and the winner of their match tonight against Three Rivers will advance to Wednesday’s semi-finals and take on the winner of tonight’s Sturgis at Gull Lake match. Coldwater was honorable mention in the final coach’s association Division Two rankings for this week, making it 3 straight weeks in the poll at honorable mention for the Cardinals. And in Division Four, Quincy has a first round match at home at 4:30 p.m. against Dansville. Today on the Coach’s Corner, it’s Bronson volleyball coach Jean LeClair.
In middle school sports, in volleyball, Coldwater hosted an invitational on Saturday and the Lady Cardinals seventh grade “A” team won their tournament to remain undefeated on the season. Jamie Wellet had 36 serving points while Kaci White had 17 aces and 3 blocks. The seventh grade “B” placed fourth in the silver bracket. Cara Goodman had 11 serving points while Nicole Adams and Chloe Altolt had 3 kills apiece.
