Verlander dominant, Coke closes it in the 9th as Tigers beat Yankees 2-1

DETROIT (WKZO) -- Justin Verlander was dominant aside from a 9th inning homerun off the bat of Eduardo Nunez and Phil Coke struck out Raul Ibanez to bring the Tigers within a win of their first World Series since 2006.

Verlander went 8 1/3 innings striking out 3 while allowing 1 run en route to his 3rd victory of the 2012 postseason.

Delmon Young remained white-hot at the plate giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead on a 370 foot homerun in the 4th inning.  Young finished 1-for-3 on the night.  Miguel Cabrera also came up big driving in what was eventually the winning run driving a double over the head of former Tiger Curtis Granderson in the 5th inning to give the Tigers  2-0 lead.

The lead held strong and was only threated in the 9th when Nunez lined his homerun just past the outstretched glove of Andy Dirks.  Up next the Tigers look for the sweep Wednesday night with first pitch set for 8pm; broadcast time is at 7:40 PM on AM 590 WKZO in Kalamazoo and 1450 WHTC, Holland's Hometown Station.
