COLDWATER (WTVB) - Branch County’s unemployment rate has improved for the third straight month and is now at its lowest point of the year. The September numbers, released by the state on Thursday, showed the jobless rate for the County at 7.4%. That compares to 8.2% in August, and 9-and-a-half percent in July. A year ago in September, it was more than two percent higher at 9.5%. Of course, fewer people are around locally to compete for those jobs with the labor force numbering 400 fewer people last month compared to September of 2011. So the actual employment boost was just 54 more workers showing up in the report. Construction employment increased in September, posting gains for the third consecutive month. Financial Activities registered a modest job hike with the increase in the real estate and rental and leasing component. Professional and Business Services jobs edged up slightly. There was a significant job gain last month in Michigan’s Mining and Logging inudustries while notable employment losses were recorded in Trade, Transportation and Utilities, Information, Leisure and Hospitality and Government sectors.
