COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - Thanks to a passerby who saw the smoke and flames early Saturday morning in Coldwater, no injuries were reported in a blaze that heavily damaged a home on West Chicago Street.Branch County 9-1-1 got the call about the fire around 4:30 a.m. Coldwater firefighters arrived to find heavy fire in the attic of the Tonya Otis residence at 281 West Chicago Street.
The flames extended to a rear utility room, bathroom and kitchen area. The center portion of the roof collapsed but many contents were salvaged sustaining water damage only. The home at 275 West Chicago received some damage on its west side to the siding and windows. The cause of the fire remains under investigation but is believed to be electrical in nature. There were no working smoke detectors. The owner was insured. The American Red Cross assisted the displaced family with their needs. That portion of West Chicago was blocked off until mid morning as firemen were on the job for some five hours.
