Kalamazoo, mi (WKZO) - Seven Red Cross volunteers from Kalamazoo are among the 40 from Michigan helping now in areas where Hurricane Sandy has been blowing and dumping rain out east. Lisa Bonney at the Oshtemo Chapter says it’s the largest mobilization of Red Cross volunteers since 1985.
She says once they can set up operations and shelters, they will be seeking out those who need relief.
She says they travel light because if they had to haul in a lot of supplies, they might not get there at all, given the obstacles.
This morning they are still waiting in staging areas. Cities like Philadelphia, Atlantic City and New York, and all the small towns between, will remain at a standstill until Sandy moves on.
