Detroit was dominated on both sides of line last night at San Francisco, where the 49’ers beat the Lion’s 27-to-19. Detroit left a lot of opportunities out on the field, having to settle for Jason Hanson’s four field goals until late in the fourth quarter when Matthew Stafford tossed a 9-yard touchdown strike to Brandon Pettigrew with 1:29 remaining.
The 49’ers, who improved to 2-and-0, have won 11 in-a-row at home against the Lions dating back to 1977. Next Sunday, Detroit plays at Tennessee.
The defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants needed 25 points in the fourth quarter to come back and beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 41-34 and avoid an 0-and-2 start. The defending AFC champion New England Patriots were beaten at home by the Arizona Cardinals, 20-18. Michael Vick led the Philadelphia Eagles back to beat the Baltimore Ravens 24-23. And the bounty-hampered New Orleans Saints fell to 0-and-2 after losing to the Panthers in Carolina, 35-27.
