The Tigers trounced the A's 12-to-2 last night behind the power hitting of Miguel Cabrera in the opener of a three-game series at Comerica Park. But Detroit also may have lost starting pitcher Max Scherzer for who knows how long. Scherzer left after only two innings due to shoulder fatigue although an MRI showed no structural damage. It’s expected Scherzer will go a couple of days without throwing and then be re-evaluated. Darin Downs pitched 2-and-two-thirds scoreless innings in relief of Sherzer for the win. Cabrera homered twice, including a grand slam, drove in six runs and scored three times while Prince Fielder popped a two-run homer and Jhonny Peralta added a solo blast.
The Tigers remain 3 games behind the Central Division leading White Sox, who won 3-to-2 last night at Kansas City. Justin Verlander goes to the mound tonight for Detroit.
The Chicago Cubs lost 3-to-1 to the Reds last night at Wrigley Field.
